Moving From Alaska?

If your moving out of Alaska we hate to see you go, but if you’re planning a move from Alaska to the lower 48 there are certain things to keep in mind;

Time Management:

  • One key to a successful move out of Alaska is to ensure you give yourself enough time to prepare for the move. Especially if you have lived in Alaska for a long time.

Reviewing items to be moved:

  • You should carefully consider what you will be moving, as the cost to move items from Alaska can be expensive.
  • It is always good to cut back where you can. Rule of thumb; if you have items placed on a top shelf or in a storage unit, do you really need them?
  • This is also a good time to look over the furniture you have been living with over the years. Is it cost effective to move it or can you replace it for less?
  • Usually, “pressboard/fiberboard” type furniture pieces are heavy and do not move well. They are probably better left to a garage sale.

Restricted items:

  • Some items are not allowed to be transported by the Moving Companies.
  • They include paints, oils, cleaning fluids or similar flammables and combustibles such as ammunition.
  • There are additional restrictions if your goods are moving, through Canada.
  • They include Weapons, foods, and some Alaskan Native Art pieces.

Pack Early:

  • Ideally, it is best to start sorting/packing anywhere from six weeks to a month before your scheduled move date. This way, you can be certain of the items you are shipping and you won’t be frantically scrambling around the Movers as your goods are being packed and loaded into the Moving Van.

Contracting a Moving Company:

  • Although Alaska is not a foreign Country, there are some additional areas of care which need to be attended when moving from Alaska.
  • World Wide Movers, Inc., your Alaskan Agent for Mayflower Movers and United Van Lines, has been in the business of moving folks in and out of Alaska since 1964.
